Alexander Lukashenko has appar\u00adently always truly believed that he is chosen by God. The boy who was born without a father in a very small Belarusian patri\u00adarchal village wanted to imagine himself a kind of Jesus who saves the \u201cGod-chosen\u201d Belarus from the World\u2019s evil. Back in 1996 on orthodox Easter, when people shouted in the church the tradi\u00adtional greeting \u201cJesus resur\u00adrected!\u201d (to which must be answered \u201cTruly, He has risen!\u201d)<\/em> Lukashenko bowed in response with his hands on his heart and quite sincerely thanked: \u201cThank you, thank you!\u201d. Over the years, the belief in his divine origin has only grown. When the rain began after a severe drought in 2000, Alexander Lukashenko blind\u00adsided the Belaru\u00adsians with a statement: \u201cBelaru\u00adsians, you asked me for rain \u2014 I gave you rain.\u201d Officials actively played along with Lukashenko: for instance, Konstantin Sumar the chairman of the regional executive committee from 2004 to 2014 explained the subor\u00addi\u00adnation at a meeting during agricul\u00adtural work in 2004: \u201cAlexander Lukashenko, you are slightly above God.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It is not surprising that the \u201cGod-chosen\u201d Alexander Lukashenko took the coron\u00adavirus not serious, explaining to the frightened population: \u201cThe Lord must protect Belarus from the coron\u00adavirus! We have already lost a lot of population, every third Belarusian died in World War II, the country was wiped off the face of the earth, many people came back from the war crippled.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Relics, holy water and prayers against the corona virus<\/h2>\n

Therefore, the author\u00adities mobilized, in particular, orthodox priests to fight against the coron\u00adavirus. As early as March 1, 2020, orthodox priests carried the relics of the martyr Konstantin Zhdanov<\/a> to insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and enter\u00adprises of Novopolotsk which people have kissed massively thus causing an outbreak of coron\u00adavirus in Novopolotsk.<\/p>\n

And on March 22, 2020, orthodox priests applied more serious technologies \u2014 they sprinkled the capital of Minsk with holy water from an helicopter. Pavel, the Metro\u00adpolitan of Minsk and Zaslavsky and the Patri\u00adarchal Exarch of Belarus, personally led this \u201coperation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Appar\u00adently, this did not help as well, and then on April 2, 2020 repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives of the Belarusian Orthodox Church flew on a plane along the borders of Belarus with copies of the shrines \u2014 with the cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk and the icon of Divine Mother Zhirovich as well as with a pectoral cross and a prayer to stop the spread of coron\u00adavirus infection. The flight took more than four hours. The three largest cities of the Vitebsk region did not fall inside the perimeter of that flight, but perhaps there was a reliance on holy relics as well. And also the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant which is under construction in Astravets close the Lithuanian border didn\u2019t fall into the perimeter, because even repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives of God can\u2019t get close to Belarusian strategic facilities.<\/p>\n

However, flying around Belarus turned out to be embar\u00adrassing: the priests rented for the flight a plane called \u201cPilate\u201d. As we already joked in social networks, \u201cthe head of the Orthodox Church of Belarus made an \u2018air cross procession\u2019 on the plane, named after the person who crucified the Christ on the cross!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The church did not stop there: From April 4, 2020, until the end of the epidemic, the Orthodox Church will make twelfe rings at the large bell of its churches four times a day, after this all bells will be ringing for ten minutes. During the ringing time, priests will offer a prayer for ending the coron\u00adavirus infection.<\/p>\n

Officials say it\u2019s \u2018pneumonia\u2019<\/h2>\n

However, as they say in Belarus, \u201cPray to God, but row for shore.\u201d Therefore, authority uses human methods \u2014 intim\u00adi\u00addation of people who can tell the truth along with divine and ordinary. Doctors are forced to sign a \u201cnon-disclosure of confi\u00adden\u00adtiality\u201d paper, and the KGB and other law enforcement agencies threaten to initiate criminal cases if infor\u00admation about coron\u00adavirus patients comes to public. There has been a wave of serious repression against bloggers and journalists, especially YouTube bloggers. The Belarusian Ministry of Health publishes statistics that cause hysterical laughter of the people because it is clear that these figures have nothing to do with reality.<\/p>\n

Things happend in the city of Vitebsk triggered first outrage among the people. A group of people close to the Vitebsk oligarch Nikolai Martynov, who visited Milan and the surrounding area during fashion days brought coron\u00adavirus from Italy to the city exactly by March 1, 2020. While they were feeling well, they were actively meeting with senior-level management of the region and other business leaders, with relatives, giving Italian gifts, going to the theatre, and when they were obviously sick, the heads of medical insti\u00adtu\u00adtions themselves rushed to serve them due to their high status.<\/p>\n

Super-spreaders caused a super outbreak of the disease, including among doctors, although officially all of them, of course, suffer from \u2018pneumonia\u2019. Nikolai Martynov has been in intensive care with the serious condition breathing with venti\u00adlator since March 9, 2020. It seems that an unplanned situation is happening in the city \u2014 under the coron\u00adavirus, or according to the author\u00adities \u2014 \u201cunder pneumonia\u201d, they are giving for use more and more new hospitals and parts of hospitals. Five medical insti\u00adtu\u00adtions re-profiled for the reception of the infected people. Life support devices can be counted on the fingers, even volun\u00adteers try to deliver them and other means. Every\u00adthing is filled with patients \u2014 even the \u201cpsychi\u00adatric hospital\u201d and the tuber\u00adcu\u00adlosis dispensary. In fact, only the regional hospital remained an ordinary hospital in the city, where they still treat patients with other diseases, but, appar\u00adently, there\u2019s not much time left to utilize it too. Some of the \u201csuspects\u201d were even sent in the countryside to Krupenino, where the president\u2019s fashionable summer cottage is located, in which he and his guests, such as Vladimir Putin, sometimes live during the \u201cSlavyansky bazaar\u201d festival in Vitebsk in the summer.<\/p>\n

Vitebsk Regional Clinical Hospital announced a public tender for the purchase of body airtight bags, and volun\u00adteers across Belarus massively sew masks and collect funds for doctors. Masks and personal protective equipment are not enough.<\/p>\n

Following Vitebsk, the whole of Belarus begins to rage. Infor\u00admation about the cases is streaming, people believe rumours, but do not believe officialdom. In a number of small towns, there are no longer enough places for coron\u00adavirus patients; they are being taken to large cities.<\/p>\n

Intim\u00adi\u00addation by the KGB<\/h2>\n

People, frightened by the police, the KGB and other depart\u00adments, were silent for two weeks. But in the end, there were so many sick with \u201cpneumonia\u201d that it was no longer possible to hide. In the beginning, the KGB was appaer\u00adentyl able to intim\u00adidate the husband of the 58-year-old Tatyana Khuzeeva, first known who died from \u201cpneumonia\u201d. She was buried in a closed coffin which is against the tradition. It was prohibited to invite anyone to a funeral. The relatives complained to independent journalists about the inability to \u201cbury her humanly\u201d and specu\u00adlated about the coron\u00adavirus since they were tested and put in quarantine.<\/p>\n

On March 21, 2020, Alexander Lukashenko instructed KGB chairman Valery Vakulchik to \u201cdeal roughly with villains who throw up fakes about COVID-19<\/em>\u201d. In response, independent media published transcripts of the inter\u00adviews with the relatives of the deceased woman, proving the veracity of the initially presented infor\u00admation. However, the Ministry of Health has publicly stated that the woman did not die of the coron\u00adavirus. Then the husband of the deceased suddenly became confused, \u201cforgot\u201d the date of hospi\u00adtal\u00adization of his wife, and \u201cremem\u00adbered\u201d that the coffin was open after all. Our experience shows that when relatives so abruptly change their testi\u00admonies, especially, at the background of Lukashenko\u2019s threats of \u201cto deal roughly\u201d, it means that they\u2019ve already \u201cdealt with\u201d them. There are other unofficial testi\u00admonies of people in hospitals about the intim\u00adi\u00addation of them and their relatives by the KGB.<\/p>\n

The repressive machine begins to malfunction<\/h2>\n

Now there are more and more dead people, and the voices of indignant relatives are getting louder. Doctors and even repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives of the power unit began to die. The repressive machine begins to malfunction. The doctor of the Vitebsk emergency hospital Natalia Larionova, who was the first of the doctors to voice what was happening in the hospitals of Vitebsk under her name, was called to the prose\u00adcu\u00adtor\u2019s office. Usually, such calls end with a prosecutor\u2019s warning and threats of further repression, but the prosecutor\u2019s office refused to issue any prosecutor\u2019s warnings and even threats of future repression did not sound regarding the doctor, which is very unusual for Belarus.<\/p>\n

Alexander Lukashenko comments on every official death from a coron\u00adavirus in Belarus by insulting and humil\u00adi\u00adating dead people. He did not express a single word of condo\u00adlences to people who died from coron\u00adavirus and their families, but, on the contrary, accuses them of spoiling his statistics with their deaths: \u201cHow can one live? 135 kg of weight! (reagrding another person who died of coron\u00adavirus) The heart almost does not work, this hurts, that hurts, a whole bunch of diseases.\u201d<\/em> Lukashenko called the well-respected actor Viktor Dashkevich, who died in Vitebsk, a \u201cpoor fellow\u201d who for some reason \u201cwalks along the street, and also works.\u201d But the 75-year-old actor was forced to work because the Vitebsk Theatre was not quaran\u00adtined by the author\u00adities. By the way, the theatre is still open.<\/p>\n

People were especially outraged that Alexander Lukashenko did not find kind and sympa\u00adthetic words to people who died from the coron\u00adavirus, however there were kind, affec\u00adtionate and admiring words addressed to young goats who were just born at the president\u2019s personal farm. Alexander Lukashenko declared goats to be \u201cthe best cure for coron\u00adavirus\u201d after vodka, sauna and tractor. Subse\u00adquently, he added to the \u201cmedicine list against the virus\u201d \u2014 \u201cto breathe smoke and a burning campfire\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A massive internet meme is speading in Belarus under the hashtag \u201clast word of the president\u201d. <\/em>People write deprecative obitu\u00adaries to themselves, trying to suggest how Lukashenko would have insulted them if they would have die from coronavirus.<\/p>\n

But the phrase \u201cthe last word of the president\u201d has another meaning. The last word before farewell, before leaving.<\/p>\n

It seems that Belarus is finally starting to say goodbye to its first president.<\/p>\n
