The project\u2019s website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gegneranalyse.de\/\">www.gegneranalyse.de<\/a>, hosts a&nbsp;collection of essays and analyses on the intel\u00adlectual forebears of the New Right. Carl Schmitt, Ernst J\u00fcnger, Oswald Spengler, Sophie Rogge-B\u00f6rner and Martin Heidegger are some of those who had a&nbsp;formative influence on anti-liberal thinking.<\/h3>\n<p>Liberal democracy is under pressure all over the world. Those who wish to avert the \u201canti-liberal counter-revolution\u201d (Timothy Garton Ash), must examine its causes and ideological models.<\/p>\n<p>History does not repeat itself, yet today\u2019s debate is reminiscent of the intel\u00adlectual and political struggles over the Weimar Republic. Hitler would not have been able to take power had it not been for the scepticism and, in some cases, hostility with which large segments of Germany\u2019s society \u2013 and partic\u00adu\u00adlarly its elites \u2013 viewed liberal&nbsp;democracy.<\/p>\n<p>The views expressed in the 1920s by Carl Schmitt, a&nbsp;prominent consti\u00adtu\u00adtional and legal theorist, can serve as an example. Schmitt found fault with the essence of liberal democracy, which he charac\u00adterised as negoti\u00adation. As Schmitt saw it, parlia\u00admen\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adanism, the separation of powers, universal rights were inven\u00adtions of liber\u00adalism, whereas democracy, presup\u00adposes national homogeneity. He wrote that those who were \u201calien in kind\/\u200bbreed\u201d (<em>Artfremde<\/em>) had thought processes that were struc\u00adturally different and that such persons should be excluded from the political decision-making process.<\/p>\n<p>All around the world, we are seeing the age of \u201cilliberal democracy\u201d proclaimed once again, restric\u00adtions on the freedom of the press and challenges to the indepen\u00addence of the judiciary. Open society is under threat \u2014 from within, by nation\u00adalist and xenophobic anti-liberal movements, and from without, by author\u00adi\u00adtarian&nbsp;regimes.<\/p>\n<p>The project is funded under the federal programme \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.demokratie-leben.de\/\">Live Democracy!<\/a>\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmfsfj.de\/bmfsfj\/meta\/en\">Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth<\/a> and by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpb.de\/die-bpb\/138852\/federal-agency-for-civic-education\">Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This aim of LibMod\u2019s \u201cLiberal Democracy and Its Adver\u00adsaries\u201d project is to examine the \u201clong lines\u201d of antiliberal thought and discuss its relevance for the debate of today.
