Liberal democracy is under pressure worldwide. At our conference \u201cRethinking Liber\u00adalism, Renewing Democracy\u201d on 24 November in Berlin and online, we discussed with inter\u00adna\u00adtional guests from academia, politics, think tanks and business how liber\u00adalism and liberal democracy must evolve in order to sustain.<\/h2>\n

Liberal democracy is under pressure worldwide. It is threatened from the outside by aggressive author\u00adi\u00adtarian regimes. The Russian war of aggression on Ukraine is only one example. Domes\u00adti\u00adcally, populist movements and parties are challenging democ\u00adracies, as are climate change, digital\u00adi\u00adsation, global pandemics, increasing inequal\u00adities and migration.<\/p>\n

Liber\u00adalism as a broad way of thinking forms the basis of liberal democ\u00adracies as we know them. Democracy and liberal democracy are almost synonymous today. Liber\u00adalism has created freedom of expression and assembly, equal rights for all and an inter\u00adna\u00adtional order governed by law. But liber\u00adalism has fallen on the defensive.<\/p>\n

Reason enoughto discuss the future of liberal democracy and liber\u00adalism. To this end, the Centre for Liberal Modernity invited to the conference \u201cRethinking Liber\u00adalism, Renewing Democracy\u201d. More than 20 speakers took part, and more than 200 guests followed the discus\u00adsions and lectures online and in person.<\/p>\n

Liberal democracy is under pressure<\/h3>\n

Anna Hofmann from the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius opened the conference. With words from liberal thinker and sociol\u00adogist Ralf Dahrendorf, she reminded the audience that freedom always goes hand in hand with respon\u00adsi\u00adbility and that people need the means to use their freedom.<\/p>\n

Ralf F\u00fccks, Executive Director of the Centre for Liberal Modernity, intro\u00adduced the challenges for liber\u00adalism and liberal democracy, which has been in retreat worldwide since 2005. This \u201cdemoc\u00adratic recession\u201d, it is getting closer and closer to us. Some, like Timothy Garton Ash, even speak of an \u201canti-liberal counter-revolution\u201d. There are many reasons for this. Liber\u00adalism has been very successful, but perhaps a little too confident of victory. The very successful political, economic and cultural moderni\u00adsation thrusts of the second half of the last century have produced winners as well as losers \u2014 and it is above all these who are now rebelling against liberal democracy.<\/p>\n

Liber\u00adalism can counteract this in various ways. It must be prepared to take the perspective of the losers of moderni\u00adsation seriously, and it must meet the need for security in times of rapid change.<\/p>\n
