What does Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine mean for German-Polish relations? Inter\u00adna\u00adtional experts, academics, journalists and diplomats from Poland and Germany, Ukraine, Belarus and the USA discussed these and other questions at the fifth German-Polish Round Table in Wojnowice.<\/h2>\n

This year\u2019s central topic was the future of the eastern policy of both countries in view of Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine and its aggressive policy in the region \u2014 but also the shaping of German-Polish relations against the backdrop of the change of government in Warsaw.<\/p>\n

The College of Eastern Europe (KEW) organised the round table together with the Zentrum Liberale Moderne and the NGO Austausch e. V., with the support of the Heinrich B\u00f6ll Foundation Warsaw, the Foundation for German-Polish Cooper\u00adation, and the City of Wroc\u0142aw.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s round table was also of great impor\u00adtance in view of the change of government in Poland, as it offered an oppor\u00adtunity for a new direction in German-Polish relations, which were in a serious crisis after 2015.<\/p>\n

How can Poland and Germany support Ukraine?<\/h2>\n

On the first day of the conference, Laurynas Vai\u010di\u016bnas (KEW), Marieluise Beck (Centre for Liberal Modernity), Maciej Matysiak (Former Deputy Chief of Military Counter\u00adin\u00adtel\u00adli\u00adgence Service in Poland), Agnieszka Bryc (University of Nicolaus Coper\u00adnicus) and Andreas Metz (Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations) discussed how inter\u00adna\u00adtional support and assis\u00adtance to Ukraine must be struc\u00adtured so that it can win the war \u2014 and what joint role Poland and Germany can play in this.<\/p>\n

The panel\u00adlists empha\u00adsised that the commitment should not be limited to the expansion of \u2014 still inade\u00adquate \u2014 military aid but must above all include concrete and reliable political, economic and human\u00adi\u00adtarian support even after the end of the war.<\/p>\n

The impor\u00adtance of German-Polish relations for Europe<\/h2>\n

Arndt Freytag von Loring\u00adhoven (Former Ambas\u00adsador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Poland), Marek Ca\u0142ka (Former Ambas\u00adsador of Poland to Azerbaijan), Irene Hahn-Fuhr (Zentrum Liberale Moderne) and Kai-Olaf Lang (German Institute for Inter\u00adna\u00adtional and Security Affairs) discussed the present and future of German-Polish relations on the second panel.<\/p>\n

Given the potential and ambitions of both countries, they are of crucial impor\u00adtance for Europe \u2014 especially for the Eastern European countries. A signif\u00adicant improvement in relations is therefore in the interests of Poland and Germany, as well as the entire region.<\/p>\n

The European security archi\u00adtecture of the future<\/h2>\n

How can we prevent Russia from continuing its aggressive policy towards its neigh\u00adbours and create a security archi\u00adtecture in Europe that enables the recon\u00adstruction of Ukraine?<\/p>\n

The second day of the conference began with a panel discussion on the European security archi\u00adtecture of the post-war period and sustainable peace. With Agnieszka Legucka (Polish Institute of Inter\u00adna\u00adtional Affairs), Stephan Bischoff (Policy Advisor to Robin Wagener), Alina Koushyk (United Transi\u00adtional Cabinet of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya), Barbara von Ow-Freytag (The Prague Civil Society Centre) and Agata Gontarczyk (Heinrich B\u00f6ll Foundation Warsaw). Another topic was the future of Belarus, which is increas\u00adingly subor\u00addinate to Moscow.<\/p>\n

Integration of Ukraine into the EU and NATO<\/h2>\n

The conference concluded with a debate with Adam Balcer (KEW), Adam Kobieracki (Former NATO Assistant Secretary General for Opera\u00adtions), Susan Stewart (German Institute for Inter\u00adna\u00adtional and Security Affairs), Olha Nykorak (Human Security Programme of the Heinrich B\u00f6ll Foundation Kyiv) and Iryna Solonenko (Centre for Liberal Modernity) on the integration of Ukraine into NATO and the EU.<\/p>\n

They empha\u00adsised the impor\u00adtance sustainable military, financial, human\u00adi\u00adtarian,  and political support from Western partners for Kyiv\u2019s integration in both blocs. The major challenges for the integration process as a result of the war, the growing popularity of Western political forces who are sceptical about Ukraine\u2019s membership in the EU and NATO, as well as the deteri\u00ado\u00adrating mood in Ukrainian society were also discussed. Against this background that EU can best support Ukraine by making sure that Ukraine\u2019s EU accession process enables Ukraine\u2019s integration into the Single Market before the full membership and is accom\u00adpanied with strong condi\u00adtion\u00adality to incen\u00adtivise reforms. Experts also noted that it is important to produce narra\u00adtives, whereby Ukraine is seen as an asset for the EU and NATO.<\/p>\n
