\n<\/span>ideas matter! That is why the Center for Liberal Modernity launched a new format: the European Book Club<\/strong>. Throughout the year, we will have the pleasure of inviting you to discus\u00adsions with inter\u00adna\u00adtional intel\u00adlec\u00adtuals about their newest books.

The next discussion will take place on the 6th of June<\/strong> and will be devoted to the book \u201c<\/strong><\/span>The Blind\u00adsided: How Berlin and Paris Cleared the Way for Russia<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> (Stock, 2023) by Sylvie Kauffmann<\/strong>. Sylvie Kauffmann is a French journalist, special\u00adizing in foreign affairs. <\/span>Sylvie Kauffmann is a journalist at Le Monde, where she was editor-in-chief and writes a weekly column on geopol\u00aditics. She was a contributor to the New York Times and writes regularly for the opinion pages of the Financial Times.<\/span><\/p>\n

France and Germany\u2019s approaches to Vladimir Putin have been severely criti\u00adcized for being misguided and detached from reality. Germany, in particular, developed signif\u00adicant reliance on Russian energy supplies, a strategic move that ultimately backfired as Moscow exploited and weaponized this depen\u00addency to its advantage. On February 24, 2022, Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine shattered the European order. Then came the questions: why did we get it so wrong? What signals did we ignore?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvie Kauffman\u2019s<\/strong> book delves into the testi\u00admonies of key figures, exploring pivotal moments spanning twenty years that led to a failure to recognize the true nature of Putin\u2019s Russia. This includes the American retreat from global leadership, Germany\u2019s historical baggage and economic interests blinding its judgment, the disregard for the perspec\u00adtives of Eastern European democ\u00adracies, and the persis\u00adtence of outdated pro-Russia senti\u00adments among certain French elites.<\/p>\n

The author will be joined by J\u00f6rg Lau,<\/strong> inter\u00adna\u00adtional corre\u00adspondent and former Foreign Editor of the German weekly DIE ZEIT.<\/strong> After intro\u00adductory remarks from Ralf F\u00fccks, <\/strong>the CEO of the Center for Liberal Modernity, Jaros\u0142aw Kuisz,<\/strong> the Program Director and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Liberal Modernity, will moderate the discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n
