Does Liber\u00adalism Have a Future? And Does It Look Like Its Past?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Drawing on his recent book, Freedom from Fear: An Incom\u00adplete History of Liber\u00adalism<\/a> (Princeton University Press) which was named among the \u2018Best Books of 2023\u2019 by the Financial Times, Alan Kahan will discuss the troubled relationship of liber\u00adalism and populism in historical perspective. Beginning his story in the late eighteenth century, and carrying it into the 21st, he will suggest that a return to the tradi\u00adtional three pillars of liber\u00adalism, freedom, markets, and morals, can help liberals respond to the populist challenge.<\/p>\n

The event takes place two days ahead of the 35th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and two days after the US elections \u2013 events deeply connected to the past and future of liberty.<\/p>\n

Alan S. Kahan<\/strong> is a US-born Professor of British Civilization at the Universit\u00e9 Paris-Saclay and a distin\u00adguished historian of liber\u00adalism. His many books include Tocqueville, Democracy, and Religion<\/em>; Liber\u00adalism in Nineteenth-Century Europe<\/em>; and Aristo\u00adcratic Liber\u00adalism<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Karolina Wigura <\/strong>is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Liberal Modernity (Berlin) and a board member of the Kultura Liberalna Foundation (Warsaw). She specializes in the political philosophy of the 20th century, history of emotions, and populism. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times <\/em>and The Guardian. <\/em>Her recent publi\u00adca\u00adtions include Posttrau\u00adma\u00adtische Souver\u00e4nit\u00e4t <\/em>(Suhrkamp 2023, with Jaros\u0142aw Kuisz).<\/p>\n

Stefan Kolev <\/strong>is the academic director of the Ludwig Erhard Forum for Economy and Society in Berlin and Professor for Political Economy at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau. Stefan Kolev\u2019s research focuses on the history of economic thought, especially ordolib\u00ader\u00adalism, Austrian economics and the German Historical School, on consti\u00adtu\u00adtional and insti\u00adtu\u00adtional economics, and on economic sociology, especially Max Weber.<\/p>\n

Ewa Atanassow<\/strong> is Professor of Politics at Bard College Berlin whose research focuses on the troubled relationship between liber\u00adalism and democracy. She is the author of Tocqueville\u2019s Dilemmas, and Ours: Sover\u00adeignty, Nation\u00adalism, Global\u00adization<\/i> (Princeton University Press, 2022); and the co-editor of When the People Rule: Popular Sover\u00adeignty in Theory and Practice <\/i>(Cambridge University Press, 2023), among others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jaros\u0142aw Kuisz <\/strong>is Senior Fellow and Program Director for Liberal Democracy at the Center for Liberal Modernity, Editor-in-Chief of the Polish online weekly Kultura Liberalna, and Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw. As a leading Polish thinker, Kuisz will share his thoughts on the historical roots of Poland\u2019s political dynamics, explored in his two latest books \u201cThe new politics of Poland<\/a>\u201d (MUP, 2023) and \u201cPostrau\u00admatic Sover\u00adeignty<\/a>\u201d (with Karolina Wigura, Suhrkamp, 2023) focusing on Poland\u2019s trans\u00adfor\u00admation after 1989.<\/p>\n
