Ukraine and Us\u201d \u2014 two questions that could not be more funda\u00admental were the focus of our inter\u00adna\u00adtional conference, the third since the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022: What does the war in Ukraine mean for the West, and what goals must a&nbsp;future peace order&nbsp;fulfill?<\/h3>\n<p><!--more-->[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=\u201c3\u201d images=\u201c66749,66753,66755,66757,66761,66763,66765,66833,66767,66771,66773,66775,66777,66779,66781,66783,66785,66787,66789,66845,66791,66793,66795,66839,66835,66843,66841,66797,66801,66803,66805,66807,66809,66849,66811,66847,66813,66815,66817,66819,66821,66823,66825,66827,66851,66853,66829\u201d img_size=\u201cfull\u201d css=\u201c\u201d][vc_column_text css=\u201c\u201d]The West is becoming increas\u00adingly tired of supporting Ukraine. Voices of self-proclaimed \u2018pacifists\u2019 on German streets and in state parlia\u00adments are shouting \u201cpeace\u201d ever more loudly \u2014 but really meaning the de facto subju\u00adgation of Ukraine. In the meantime, people in Ukraine are heading for a&nbsp;harsh winter. Putin is using cold as a&nbsp;weapon and is relying on attrition and&nbsp;fear.<\/p>\n<h2>Peace is only possible through military&nbsp;strength<\/h2>\n<p>Volodymyr Zelensky has just presented his long-held secret \u201cvictory plan\u201d in Washington and at the EU summit and has been widely criti\u00adcized for it. Key points include: Ukraine must be integrated into European and transat\u00adlantic alliances, and it can only negotiate with Russia from a&nbsp;position of military strength. This neces\u00adsarily means that it is allowed to attack airfields within Russia \u2014 in accor\u00addance with inter\u00adna\u00adtional law, by the way \u2014 in order to effec\u00adtively protect its&nbsp;airspace.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhat we are trying to avoid is the so-called World War II Russian narrative of nuclear deter\u00adrence. It has seeped into our psyche and nourishes the Russian narrative. We have been asleep the last two years. What is driving this strategic fog is fear. The conclu\u00adsions we draw from history are the wrong ones. Sometimes you have to escalate in order to deescalate. Ukraine can win. We can turn every\u00adthing around in Ukraine the next year.\u201c Alina&nbsp;Polyakova<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wy08dk7i2rY?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An effective protection would also be the desired NATO membership of Ukraine. This is not only in the interest of Ukraine, but it is not only in the interest of the Balkan states and the Baltic countries. It is also in the interest of the whole of Europe and the liberal West. It is in Germany\u2019s own best&nbsp;interest.<\/p>\n<h2>Ukraine\u2019s security is our&nbsp;security<\/h2>\n<p>For Putin, Ukraine is just the beginning, he says that very clear and audible. But we are ignoring reality and still refuse to act decisively. Decisiveness is now the only way to prevent a&nbsp;much larger war and to protect our democ\u00adratic and liberal values, the global world order and our own population. It is the only way to secure our own future. The good news is: If we are deter\u00admined now and not too hesitant, this can be achieved. Then, but only then, can Ukraine win. It is up to us. If we don\u2019t, the war will continue. And it will become far more costly and dangerous than it already&nbsp;is.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine doesn\u2019t just need us. We also need&nbsp;Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-teams=\"true\"><span class=\"ui-provider a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak\" dir=\"ltr\"><i>\u201eThere are forces within the German population that want to make us believe that Ukraine is none of our business. Ukraine is also defending our European security and the inter\u00adna\u00adtional rules-based order. The outcome of this war will answer the question of whether it will be possible to shift borders by force in the 21st century. Putin\u2019s war aim is not limited to Ukraine; Putin is concerned with the failure of NATO and the failure of the inter\u00adna\u00adtional order. He wants to replace these systems with his own sphere of influence and assert his influence by force and military strength. Peace on such a&nbsp;basis is not sustainable as long as Moscow is not prepared to accept terri\u00adtorial integrity and sover\u00adeignty. <\/i><\/span><\/span>Tobias Lindner<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mIabbakgXLo?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<h2>Even if we don\u2019t want to: We have long been at war with&nbsp;Russia<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s already not just a&nbsp;war in Ukraine: Disin\u00adfor\u00admation campaigns, murders, acts of sabotage, cyber\u00adat\u00adtacks and espionage... All of this is part of the hybrid war that Russia has been waging against the West for years: Against NATO and above all against Germany. Also because we \u2014 unlike the Balkan states, unlike Poland \u2014 have fallen for Putin\u2019s narrative and are falling for his rhetoric that feeds fear and&nbsp;insecurity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe leadership in the US is either unable or unwilling to under\u00adstand the changes. Our security, our transat\u00adlantic security and our peace is being threatened by two powers: China and Russia. If we don\u2019t stop them in Ukraine, we have to face them somewhere else. The admin\u00adis\u00adtration in the US and Germany have enforced their weakness. They have managed to do this by playing up the Russian nuclear threat.\u201d&nbsp;John E.&nbsp;Herbst<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While German politi\u00adcians never tire of empha\u00adsizing what they will not do in order not to enrage Putin and prevent the spectre of nuclear war that he has cleverly conjured up from becoming reality (\u201cNo attacks on Russian territory\u201d, \u201cWe are not at war with Russia\u201d), Russia repeats very clearly who it is at war with: It is not Ukraine alone, it is the West, it is us.[\/vc_column_text]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DA9oCDX_vFM?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<h2>Alliance with Western&nbsp;democrats<\/h2>\n<p>The outcome of the elections in the USA is imminent and it is hard to predict what this will mean for Europe, NATO and the alliances of Western democ\u00adracies. Ukraine\u2019s accession processes to the European Union are in full swing, but they are compli\u00adcated and lengthy. A&nbsp;swift admission of Ukraine to the EU would also be of central impor\u00adtance. One might think that the adver\u00adsities and cruel realities of war would have weakened Ukraine in its efforts to join the EU. The opposite is the case: the democ\u00adra\u00adti\u00adzation processes continues to receive great support from civil&nbsp;society.<\/p>\n<h2>Global alliances of&nbsp;autocrats<\/h2>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\"><span class=\"ui-provider a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak\" dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile, Russia has long since formed alliances with other autocrats and is pursuing a&nbsp;clear strategy, something we lack. Russia is attacking Ukraine with Iranian drones, it is supported by China, and South Korea\u2019s secret service reports that it has evidence about North Korea soldiers being trained in Russia for the war in Ukraine. Not to mention the close alliances with Belarus, which shares a&nbsp;border with Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, where Putin uses migrants as&nbsp;weapons.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201eWhere is there an outcry about North Korea inter\u00advening in the war? Where is there an outcry about the alliance with Iran? We have a&nbsp;Moscow connection in Germany. We also have to come to terms with that. We must demand that Russia recog\u00adnizes the right of its neigh\u00adboring states to exist. We must demand the withdrawal of nuclear weapons in Kalin\u00adingrad. We must demand that Georgia be stabi\u00adlized again. Peace can only exist in freedom and security.\u201c Roderich Kiesewetter<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What is at stake here is not trivial: it is about our security, our freedom, our democ\u00adratic values. As cynical as it sounds, supporting Ukraine decisively now is the cheapest way to protect&nbsp;ourselves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe cheapest way to help Ukraine is to give all weapons at once. You will<\/em> <em>pay less if you pay it all at once. The worst scenario is to make a&nbsp;deal on the basis of giving up. Then as a&nbsp;conse\u00adquence, in eight years from now, we will have another war. We have a&nbsp;whole gener\u00adation of people to lose. It is important to think strate\u00adgi\u00adcally but not on the basis of fear. <\/em><em>Because that is what Putin expects.\u201d&nbsp;Inna Sovsun<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This means not sending weapons according to the principle of \u201ctoo little, too late\u201d; it would be more expedient to give Ukraine all the weapons at once and allow it not only to intercept the missiles, but also to enable it to hit the missile launcher itself. In other words: to attack airfields inside&nbsp;Russia.<\/p>\n<h2>Strength\u00adening the resilience of the energy infrastructure<\/h2>\n<p>So far, Ukraine has only been able to protect itself against Russia\u2019s attacks to a&nbsp;limited extent and so the daily attacks in Ukraine are not only costing more and more lives, Russia is also delib\u00ader\u00adately destroying Ukraine\u2019s energy infra\u00adstructure. Ukraine is facing a&nbsp;winter that threatens to be the worst since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion. Moscow is using cold as a&nbsp;weapon. Strength\u00adening the resilience of Ukraine\u2019s infra\u00adstructure on the one hand and rebuilding destroyed parts on the other is therefore crucial. Protection is cheaper than recon\u00adstruction. However, protection can only be achieved through military&nbsp;strength.<\/p>\n<h2>Abusive concept of&nbsp;peace<\/h2>\n<p>This military strength is the only conceivable basis for a&nbsp;peace worthy of the name. Where Russian troops are already occupying Ukrainian territory, what threatens the rest of the country if Russia continues to advance, already prevails: Murder, torture, kidnapping. This is not peace. Peace must not only be sustainable, it must also neces\u00adsarily include freedom and&nbsp;security.<\/p>\n<p>But it is precisely this peace that Russia rejects. All efforts by the West to negotiate with Moscow have so far come to nothing. Regardless of this, the demands for peace from the growing illiberal forces of BSW and AfD and the increas\u00adingly loud voices on German streets are not directed at Putin, but at Ukraine. They are repeating Putin\u2019s propa\u00adganda and calling for a&nbsp;de facto capit\u00adu\u00adlation of Ukraine, which would also be disas\u00adtrous for our own security. Because Putin will&nbsp;continue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201eWe must maintain our strength as a&nbsp;democ\u00adratic country. Russia is investing heavily in destroying and desta\u00adbi\u00adlizing democ\u00adracies. We see the poison of extremist simpli\u00adfi\u00adcation: AfD and BSW are spreading this poison with their messages. We could do a&nbsp;lot, but only if we remain stable democ\u00adracies. We must not succumb to the temptation to feed political escalation. We are faced with a&nbsp;choice between liberal democracy and autocracy. It\u2019s not trivial, every\u00adthing is at stake.\u201c Robin&nbsp;Wagener<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d9G_Yz_LNqg?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<h2>It is the job of politi\u00adcians to tell people the&nbsp;truth<\/h2>\n<p>Explaining this to the German population, dealing with respon\u00adsible voters in an adult manner and speaking unpleasant truths would be the task of politics. Because people can be expected to handle the truth. Only those who know it can draw the right conclu\u00adsions and make their own&nbsp;decisions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201eSurveys show: If politics is honest and speaks an honest language, then it is also possible to find majorities in politics for the right actions. We need these debates. We live in times in which the question arises as to whether our children and grand\u00adchildren will still be able to live in peace, security and democracy. That is what matters today.\u201c <\/em><em>Agnieszka Brugger<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead, Putin\u2019s fear narra\u00adtives are being repeated, making the Kremlin\u2019s rhetoric a&nbsp;far more effective weapon than any Iranian drone, however modern it may&nbsp;be.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cChancellor Scholz should have countered the fears of the population and not encouraged the aggressor by backing down. He should have clearly stated what we are defending here.\u201d <em>Johann David&nbsp;Wadephul<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far, we have been playing Putin\u2019s game. We are playing along and anxiously assuming the role assigned to us. We urgently need to take a&nbsp;funda\u00admen\u00adtally different view of the war in Ukraine and of Russia. Moscow is waging an imperi\u00adalist, colonialist war in the middle of the 21st&nbsp;century.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cImperi\u00adalism is in many ways seen as Western imperi\u00adalism. So it is about colonizing the distant ones, that\u2019s the narrative. The racist projection is: You cannot overcome the difference, because the difference is racial. Instead, the Russian colonial\u00adization is about the colonial\u00adization of the enclosed ones. The narrative is: \u2018You are not different to me, but you are the same as me. <\/em><em>So it is about assim\u00adi\u00adlation.\u201d <\/em><em>Volodymyr Yermolenko<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o6qMy-CBo0w?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext css=\u201c\u201d]Instead of under\u00adstanding this, roman\u00adti\u00adcized images of Russia still prevail in Germany. We need a&nbsp;change of perspec\u00adtives, a&nbsp;funda\u00admental one. We have to recognize: The Ukraine war is our war. It is a&nbsp;global war that can only be won through military strength and together as an alliance of democrats. To do this, we need Ukraine just as much as it needs us. We must act. Right now. Either Europe wakes up from its deep sleep or it will be the end of European values and the order we grew up&nbsp;with.\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe situation is dark, but the only chance we have is by fighting united and by having no fear.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><em>Lesia Ogryzko<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere is no other way for the West to survive than to become more active and decisive.
