Liberal democracy is navigating through turbulent times as Donald Trump\u2019s renewed victory as well as the strength\u00adening of right-wing nation\u00adalist forces in Europe make clear. Democrats and liberals must come out of the defensive; the open society needs new impetus. On January 16, together with inter\u00adna\u00adtional guests, we will be discussing what ideas and policies are needed and promising. <\/span><\/h3>\n

The current state of liber\u00adalism is a cause for great concern. The most recent and most conse\u00adquential example of the dominant illiberal swing is the stunning comeback of Donald Trump in the United States. Right-wing populist forces are in government in Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, the Nether\u00adlands and many other countries. Countries like Poland, where a national-populist government has been voted out, are the exception. To get out of the liberal defensive, there needs to be a better under\u00adstanding of the causes of the crisis of liberal democracy and the rise of populism. Furthermore, fresh ideas are needed on how liberal democracy should be renewed to regain support domes\u00adti\u00adcally and inter\u00adna\u00adtionally. Key questions we want to discuss:<\/p>\n

\u2022\u2003\u2003Do the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions of democracy need to be reformed, and the possi\u00adbil\u00adities of democ\u00adratic partic\u00adi\u00adpation expanded?
\n\u2022\u2003\u2003How can the perfor\u00admance of liberal democ\u00adracies be improved in the face of huge political, economic and ecological challenges?
\n\u2022\u2003\u2003How should they deal with core issues on the populist agenda \u2013 such as the issue of migration?
\n\u2022\u2003\u2003What follows from the concept of a \u201crobust democracy\u201d \u2013 and how do we avoid slipping into an author\u00adi\u00adtarian logic in the name of defending freedom?
\n\u2022\u2003\u2003How should liberal democ\u00adracies deal with the new systemic conflict with author\u00adi\u00adtarian powers, especially China and Russia?
\n\u2022\u2003\u2003Which gaps and malde\u00advel\u00adop\u00adments in liber\u00adalism itself contributed to its crisis?
\n\u2022\u2003\u2003How can liberal democrats counter the \u201cpolitics of emotions\u201d of populist actors?<\/p>\n
