The split in transat\u00adlantic relations is becoming increas\u00adingly clear. For Europe, this is now the moment of truth. The outcome of the war in Ukraine will have a&nbsp;decisive influence on the future of our continent. These messages also shaped the LibMod conference \u201cUkraine and us. One can only say to President Trump: \u2018It is not Ukraine that must be grateful to us, but we have to be grateful to Ukraine!\u2019\u201d These <\/em>words of Marieluise Beck opened the conference. Ralf F\u00fccks in his welcoming speech added: <em>\u201dAt this moment, every\u00adthing for which hundreds of thousands have fought in recent years, risking their lives, is at stake.<\/em> <em>It is a&nbsp;brutal perversion of a&nbsp;noble word when, in the name of peace, the subju\u00adgation of Ukraine is effec\u00adtively demanded.\u201d <\/em>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FMeoWnT3DHk?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<h2>No more relying on the&nbsp;US<\/h2>\n<p><em>\u201cThe longer we wonder how we should deal with the US, the more we miss the point at which we have to take respon\u00adsi\u00adbility for our own security.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 <em>Sara Nanni (Alliance 90\/\u200bThe&nbsp;Greens)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The meeting between Trump, Vance and Selensky in the Oval Office, which Solomiia Bobrovska described as <em>\u201cdisgusting, ugly and a&nbsp;humil\u00adi\u00adation of Ukrainian dignity\u201d<\/em>, as well as the further actions of the US admin\u00adis\u00adtration, have forced Europe to realize that it can no longer count on US support. Sara Nanni (Alliance 90\/\u200bThe Greens), a&nbsp;member of the Bundestag, said: <em>\u201cThe longer we wonder how we should deal with the US, the more we miss the point in time when we have to take respon\u00adsi\u00adbility for our own security<\/em>.\u201d[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bGmP7PhNrrY?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext css=\u201c\u201d]There was broad agreement among the Europeans in their assessment of the new US policy. Danish expert Flemming Splidsboel Hansen said: <em>\u201cThe impact of Trump\u2019s presi\u00addency on transat\u00adlantic relations has already been devas\u00adtating, even though he only took office two months ago.<\/em> <em>I&nbsp;see no signs that his admin\u00adis\u00adtration is willing to put pressure on Russia. So far, this has not led to any positive devel\u00adop\u00adments for Ukraine. Rather, we see a&nbsp;delib\u00aderate policy of margin\u00adal\u00adizing Ukraine and its president.\u201d<\/em>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aU3vviOAeYM?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext css=\u201c\u201d]His Swedish colleague Charlotta Rodhe, deputy director at the Stockholm Center for Eastern Europe Studies, was equally critical: \u201c<em>Every time we have rewarded Russian aggression by making conces\u00adsions to achieve de-escalation, this approach has led to more&nbsp;escalation.\u201d<\/em>\n<p>Russia\u2019s aim is to create the illusion of negoti\u00ada\u00adtions<em>. \u201cThis is to prevent us from making the necessary decisions. Sham negoti\u00ada\u00adtions are a&nbsp;trap for us.\u201d <\/em>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iFWjSRnkqRM?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext css=\u201c\u201d]Solomiia Bobrovska warned: <em>\u201cThere is an endless list of demands from the Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtration about what Ukraine has to do. But what are the demands on the Russian side? Will Russia stop fighting on the front line?<\/em> <em>[...] The Russian threat will not end and we need to be prepared for&nbsp;that.\u201d<\/em>\n<p>Marek \u015awier\u00adczy\u0144ski of Warsaw think tank Polityka Insight advised caution, saying it was unhelpful to go into conflict mode with the US, especially for the Baltic states and Poland, which are partic\u00adu\u00adlarly dependent on Washing\u00adton\u2019s support.[\/vc_column_text]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4yBreWsIZ40?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ea7N5po7M5Y?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<h2>Moment of truth for&nbsp;Europe<\/h2>\n<p>European intel\u00adli\u00adgence services have openly stated that plans to attack NATO countries are more than just a&nbsp;fantasy of Kremlin propa\u00adgan\u00addists. We should be prepared for Russia to test Article 5, the mutual defense clause of the NATO treaty, within the next five years. Ralf F\u00fccks commented:<em> \u201cThe realization that we have to prepare for war in order to prevent it, marks a&nbsp;profound change in public awareness. This is not so much a&nbsp;question of resources as of political&nbsp;will.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are in the deepest security and defense crisis since World War II. This crisis will force us to become signif\u00adi\u00adcantly stronger on the European continent.\u201d \u2013 Andrius&nbsp;Kubilius<\/em><\/p>\n<p>EU Commis\u00adsioner Kubilius empha\u00adsized the dramatic nature of the&nbsp;situation:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are in the deepest security and defense crisis since World War II. This crisis will force us to become signif\u00adi\u00adcantly stronger on the European continent [...] We are living in historic times \u2013 for Ukraine, Germany and all of Europe. American engagement is waning while the Russian threat is growing.\u201d<\/em> Andrius Kubilius explained the steps the EU is already taking to meet this challenge: The new <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWhite Paper\u201d on Defense<\/a>, published on March 19, 2025, presents a&nbsp;compre\u00adhensive strategy for strength\u00adening European defense capabil\u00adities by 2030. It contains a&nbsp;number of proposals to close critical capacity gaps and develop a&nbsp;strong defense indus\u00adtrial&nbsp;base.<\/p>\n<p>Strength\u00adening the partnership with other democ\u00adracies in the world also plays an important role. The chapter on Ukraine provides for increased military aid and deeper integration of the European and Ukrainian defense industry. It should help to expand and modernize European arms production. Ukraine is ahead of Europe in its ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/defence-industry.eu\/ukraines-defence-industry-set-to-reach-usd-35-billion-production-capacity-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rapidly increase its own arms production, even under war&nbsp;conditions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Commission has presented an ambitious defense package as part of the \u201cReArm Europe\/\u200bReadiness 2030\u201d program, which provides EU member states with financial resources to increase investment in defense. Ukraine and the EFTA\/\u200bEEA countries will be able to partic\u00adipate in joint procure\u00adments, and it will be possible to purchase weapons from their&nbsp;companies.<\/p>\n<p>Andrius Kubilius reiterated that the European Union would definitely not recognize the occupation and annex\u00adation of Ukrainian terri\u00adtories by Russia. The path for the future reinte\u00adgration of these terri\u00adtories into Ukraine must remain open. The EU will not lift sanctions against Russia as long as the Kremlin continues to occupy Ukrainian territory. Europe will also not accept restric\u00adtions on Ukraine\u2019s military capacity. A&nbsp;strong Ukrainian army is in Europe\u2019s&nbsp;interest.<\/p>\n<p>Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba called on European policy\u00admakers to act now, even before the final questions of future European defense have been clarified. He said that European security would be decided in Ukraine in the coming months. This requires a&nbsp;different level of deter\u00admi\u00adnation and speed from European policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>The EU should redirect arms exports to Ukraine that have been agreed with other countries. In order to quickly rearm Ukraine, the EU member states should follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/mod.gov.ua\/en\/news\/results-of-the-danish-model-of-support-for-ukraine-s-defense-industry-in-2024-the-armed-forces-of-ukraine-received-weapons-valued-at-nearly-538-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danish model<\/a> and directly commission weapons and equipment from the Ukrainian defense industry. They could deliver cheaper and faster than Western European&nbsp;companies.<\/p>\n<p>Further steps towards <em>common security<\/em> would be a&nbsp;European air umbrella for Ukraine, European training missions for the Ukrainian army, a&nbsp;joint military presence in the Black Sea and the deployment of European troops in Ukraine.[\/vc_column_text]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cI5rO7mtAcw?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext&nbsp;css=\u201c\u201d]\n<h2>Turning point number&nbsp;two<\/h2>\n<p>In the Nordic and Baltic countries, the threat from Russia has long been perceived differ\u00adently than in many Western European countries. Ambas\u00adsador Alda Vanaga of Latvia commented on this, saying, <em>\u201cOur support comes from the under\u00adstanding that this is also our war. Ukraine is defending our freedom and our democracy. There is a&nbsp;great deal of support from Germany, but it comes from solidarity and not because Germany perceives Russia as a&nbsp;threat. I&nbsp;hope that this way of thinking will change.\u201d<\/em>[\/\u200bvc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext]<\/p><div class=\"gem-youtube gem-wrapbox gem-wrapbox-style-no-style rounded-corners gem-wrapbox-position-below\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><div class=\"gem-wrapbox-inner gem-ratio-style\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%\"><iframe class=\"gem-wrapbox-element img-responsive\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Au3DW7DkAE?rel=0&amp;wmode=opaque\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>[vc_\u200bcolumn_\u200btext css=\u201c\u201d]Marieluise Beck agreed:<em> \u201cOur support is not a&nbsp;sign of generosity \u2013 it allows us to sit here warm and dry while Ukraine bleeds for&nbsp;us.\u201d<\/em>\n<p>In Europe, Germany\u2019s increased efforts to expand its defense capabil\u00adities are seen with approval. The open question is whether Germany will be on board with the UK, France and other European countries when it comes to forming a \u201ccoalition of the willing\u201d to secure a&nbsp;possible ceasefire in Ukraine. Our partners expect the new German government to bring about a \u201csecond turning point\u201d in its support for Ukraine and to strengthen European&nbsp;defense.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s attack on Ukraine and the fault lines in its relationship with the US could become a&nbsp;catalyst for the emergence of a&nbsp;European defense union that can exist within NATO. In this new security archi\u00adtecture, the Nordic-Baltic defense cooper\u00adation (NB8 initiative) and cooper\u00adation with Ukraine take on a&nbsp;special significance.<\/p>\n<p>Essen\u00adtials for negoti\u00ada\u00adtions to end the&nbsp;war<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, Ralf F\u00fccks summa\u00adrized the key messages of the&nbsp;conference:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe negoti\u00ada\u00adtions between Putin and Trump are not about a&nbsp;peace worthy of the name. There can be no peace in the sense of constructive cooper\u00adation and partnership-based coexis\u00adtence with the current Russian regime. The only thing that can be at stake are the condi\u00adtions for a&nbsp;stable ceasefire.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The only way to force Putin to end the war is to increase arms supplies to Ukraine and tighten sanctions against Russia. The aggressor must be held respon\u00adsible for ending the war, not Ukraine, which is under massive pressure from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>F\u00fccks called on European govern\u00adments to agree on common \u201cessen\u00adtials\u201d for negoti\u00ada\u00adtions to end the war \u2013 also as a&nbsp;counter\u00adweight to&nbsp;Washington:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;1. Nothing about Ukraine without&nbsp;Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Europe must ensure that Ukraine is not black\u00admailed into a&nbsp;dictated peace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;2. No recog\u00adnition of terri\u00adtorial conquests and no division of Ukraine into a&nbsp;western and a&nbsp;Russian sphere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recog\u00adnition of forcible conquests would be a&nbsp;breach of inter\u00adna\u00adtional&nbsp;law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;3. Full sover\u00adeignty for&nbsp;Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any agreement to end the war must respect Ukraine\u2019s full sover\u00adeignty over its internal affairs and over its foreign and alliance policy. The option of joining NATO must remain open, even if it does not happen&nbsp;tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;4. EU integration is non-negotiable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, it must be accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>In the words of Andrius Kubilius: <em>\u201cUkraine\u2019s integration into the European Union \u2013 that is our answer to&nbsp;Putin.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23921\" src=\"https:\/\/libmodredaktion.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20240905145906\/textende.png\" alt=\"Textende\" width=\"40\" height=\"120\">[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=\u201c\u201d]<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">t<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Hat Ihnen unser Beitrag gefallen?
