In the run-up to the Alaska summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Thomas Enders (President of the German Council on Foreign Relations), Marieluise Beck and Ralf F\u00fccks (Center for Liberal Modernity) have issued an appeal to the German government, naming five essen\u00adtials that Europe must now stand for.<\/h3>\n

An appeal to the German government ahead of the Alaska summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin<\/h2>\n

Dear Mr. Chancellor,<\/p>\n

when President Trump meets with Vladimir Putin this Friday to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, the future of Europe will also be at stake.<\/p>\n

We call on the German government to work with our European partners in the run-up to this summit to make it clear that:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. European govern\u00adments will not agree to a \u201cpeace plan\u201d that is imposed on President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government.<\/li>\n
  2. There will be no recog\u00adnition of Russia\u2019s military conquests in Ukraine.<\/li>\n
  3. Ukraine\u2019s political sover\u00adeignty, including its foreign policy orien\u00adtation, must not be restricted.<\/li>\n
  4. Ukraine\u2019s integration into the European community is non-negotiable.<\/li>\n
  5. A ceasefire must be secured by robust security guarantees for Ukraine. Europe is prepared to make a signif\u00adicant contri\u00adbution to this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    However, European interests and demands will only carry weight if the German government, together with its partners, does every\u00adthing in its power to ensure that Ukraine can conduct future negoti\u00ada\u00adtions on an end to the war from a position of military strength.<\/p>\n
