Liberal democracy is under pressure. Across the Western world, populist movements have surged \u2014 fuelled by disil\u00adlu\u00adsionment, nativism, and a growing distrust in liberal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and the liberal elite. How did we arrive at this point, and what can be done to restore confi\u00addence in liberal ideals and their promise for a better world of tomorrow?<\/p>\n

The new volume Liberal Response to Populism<\/a> (De Gruyter 2025), edited by Karen Horn, Stefan Kolev, and Julian F. M\u00fcller, offers a multi\u00adfaceted exami\u00adnation of this challenge. From the psychology of radical\u00adization to the lure of sover\u00adeignty and from historical reflec\u00adtions to forward-looking policy innova\u00adtions, the book explores how liber\u00adalism can meet the populist moment with clarity, creativity, and renewed conviction.<\/p>\n

Speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Karen Horn<\/strong>
\nKaren Horn is a honorary professor of economics at the University of Erfurt (Germany), where she teaches the history of economic thought and economic journalism. She is partic\u00adu\u00adlarly inter\u00adested in the work of Adam Smith, Friedrich A. Hayek, Walter Eucken, and James M. Buchanan, and in the tradition of liber\u00adalism generally, with a special focus on ordolib\u00ader\u00adalism. At the Verein f\u00fcr Socialpolitik, the associ\u00adation of German-speaking econo\u00admists, she is a member of the committee for the history of economic thought. She serves as an editor of Perspek\u00adtiven der Wirtschaft\u00adspolitik, one of the two academic journals of the Verein, and is the co-chair of the NOUS network. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Lausanne (Switzerland).<\/p>\n

Stefan Kolev<\/strong>
\nStefan Kolev is the academic director of the Ludwig Erhard Forum for Economy and Society in Berlin and a professor of political economy at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau (Germany). His research centers on the history of economic thought, especially ordolib\u00ader\u00adalism and Austrian economics, consti\u00adtu\u00adtional economics, and the future of the Social Market Economy. He is a co-editor of the ORDO Yearbook for the Order of Economy and Society and of the Journal of Contextual Economics \u2013 Schmollers Jahrbuch. He spent his last sabbatical at the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Insti\u00adtu\u00adtions at Princeton University (USA). He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Hamburg (Germany).<\/p>\n

Aris Trantidis
\n<\/strong>Lecturer in Inter\u00adna\u00adtional Relations and Politics, University of Lincoln. His research stands at the inter\u00adsection of politics and political economy, with publi\u00adca\u00adtions on clien\u00adtelism, dominant party systems and semi-author\u00adi\u00adtarian regimes. He has published on the concept of democracy and hegemony and has written exten\u00adsively on the Greek crisis.<\/p>\n

Karolina Wigura (Moder\u00adation)<\/strong>
\nKarolina Wigura is senior Fellow at the Center for Liberal Modernity. She is Associate Professor at Warsaw University and a Member of the Board at Kultura Liberalna Foundation. Wigura was awarded fellow\u00adships at the Wissenschaft\u00adskolleg zu Berlin and the Robert Bosch Academy. From 2016 to 2018, she was a Co-Director of the Polish Program \u201cKnowledge Bridges\u201d at St Antony\u2019s College at the University of Oxford. Together with Jaros\u0142aw Kuisz, she recently published Post-Traumatic Sover\u00adeignty. An Essay (Suhrkamp 2023). She is a regular contributor to The New York Times and The Guardian.<\/p>\n
