The recurring discus\u00adsions about peace talks with Moscow overlook one central problem. Although Russia\u2019s military and economic situation is becoming increas\u00adingly difficult, the Kremlin shows no willingness to make peace. Putin is still aiming for victory, and there is no end to Russia\u2019s war of aggression in sight.<\/p>\n
For Europe, it remains essential to support Ukraine so that it is strong enough to make Russia end the war. At the same time, European countries need to strengthen their defence capabil\u00adities and improve their security cooper\u00adation so that, in the future, they can ensure their own security even without US support. Ukraine will be a central part of Europe\u2019s future security architecture.<\/p>\n
Although it is impos\u00adsible to know when the fighting will end, Europe must already prepare for what comes after\u00adwards. Without funda\u00admental change in Russia, a ceasefire will neither change the repressive nature of the regime nor limit Moscow\u2019s ambitions, which go far beyond Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Against this backdrop, the Center of Liberal Modernity is holding its annual public discussion \u201cRussia and the West\u201d on October 14. This year\u2019s subtitle is \u201cEurope\u2019s Security and Long-Term Russia Strategy<\/em>\u201d. The event follows our annual expert conference held on the same day.<\/p>\n The evening debate will focus on the main elements of a future European policy towards Russia: Do we need to prepare for a long-term conflict with Russia while also offering the possi\u00adbility of cooper\u00adation under certain condi\u00adtions?
