The recurring discus\u00adsions about peace talks with Moscow are essen\u00adtially flawed. Although Russia\u2019s military and economic situation is becoming increas\u00adingly difficult, the Kremlin is showing no willingness to make peace. Putin remains bent on victory and no end to Russia\u2019s war of aggression is in sight.<\/p>\n
For Europe, it remains essential to support Ukraine so that it is strong enough to make Russia end the war. At the same time, Europeans need to strengthen their defence capabil\u00adities and security cooper\u00adation in order to ensure their own long-term security even without US support. Ukraine is a corner\u00adstone of Europe\u2019s future security architecture.<\/p>\n
Although an end to the fighting is not foreseeable right now, Europe must prepare for what comes after\u00adwards. Without funda\u00admental change in Russia, a ceasefire will neither change the repressive nature of the regime nor limit Moscow\u2019s ambitions, which go far beyond Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Against this backdrop, the Center of Liberal Modernity is holding its annual public discussion \u201cRussia and the West\u201d on October 14. This year\u2019s subtitle is \u201cEurope\u2019s Security and long-term Russia Strategy<\/em>\u201d. The event follows our annual expert conference held on the same day.<\/p>\n The debate will focus on the main elements of a future Russia policy: Do we need to prepare for a long-term conflict while also offering avenues for condi\u00adtional cooper\u00adation? Which demands should Europe make vis-a-vis Russia\u2019s elites and what leverage do we have to give them weight?
