Public Discussion “Russia and the West” – Save the date!
The recurring discussions about peace talks with Moscow overlook one central problem. Although Russia’s military and economic situation is becoming increasingly difficult, the Kremlin shows no willingness to make peace. Putin is still aiming for victory, and there is no end to Russia’s war of aggression in sight.
For Europe, it remains essential to support Ukraine so that it is strong enough to make Russia end the war. At the same time, European countries need to strengthen their defence capabilities and improve their security cooperation so that, in the future, they can ensure their own security even without US support. Ukraine will be a central part of Europe’s future security architecture.
Although it is impossible to know when the fighting will end, Europe must already prepare for what comes afterwards. Without fundamental change in Russia, a ceasefire will neither change the repressive nature of the regime nor limit Moscow’s ambitions, which go far beyond Ukraine.
Against this backdrop, the Center of Liberal Modernity is holding its annual public discussion “Russia and the West” on October 14. This year’s subtitle is “Europe’s Security and Long-Term Russia Strategy”. The event follows our annual expert conference held on the same day.
The evening debate will focus on the main elements of a future European policy towards Russia: Do we need to prepare for a long-term conflict with Russia while also offering the possibility of cooperation under certain conditions? What demands should Europe make of Russia’s political and economic elites, and what means does it have to give these demands real weight? How can the West influence political developments within Russia?
