Public Discussion “Russia and the West” – Save the date!
The recurring discussions about peace talks with Moscow are essentially flawed. Although Russia’s military and economic situation is becoming increasingly difficult, the Kremlin is showing no willingness to make peace. Putin remains bent on victory and no end to Russia’s war of aggression is in sight.
For Europe, it remains essential to support Ukraine so that it is strong enough to make Russia end the war. At the same time, Europeans need to strengthen their defence capabilities and security cooperation in order to ensure their own long-term security even without US support. Ukraine is a cornerstone of Europe’s future security architecture.
Although an end to the fighting is not foreseeable right now, Europe must prepare for what comes afterwards. Without fundamental change in Russia, a ceasefire will neither change the repressive nature of the regime nor limit Moscow’s ambitions, which go far beyond Ukraine.
Against this backdrop, the Center of Liberal Modernity is holding its annual public discussion “Russia and the West” on October 14. This year’s subtitle is “Europe’s Security and long-term Russia Strategy”. The event follows our annual expert conference held on the same day.
The debate will focus on the main elements of a future Russia policy: Do we need to prepare for a long-term conflict while also offering avenues for conditional cooperation? Which demands should Europe make vis-a-vis Russia’s elites and what leverage do we have to give them weight? How can the West influence political developments within Russia?
