Nikolaus worked as a journalist in Russia for a long time, first as a reporter and deputy news editor of the “Moscow Times”, later as a correspondent for Deutsche Presse-Agentur. In 2015/16, he worked for the OSCE observer mission in Donetsk/Ukraine and has been writing a regular newsletter for DRA e.V. about the “People’s Republics” of eastern Ukraine ever since. Together with Thomas de Waal he is co-author of the book “Beyond Frozen Conflict” (CEPS, 2020).
