How Ukraine’s history has shaped its place in Europe. With Prof. Paul Robert Magocsi
The Center for Liberal Modernity, the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, and the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter cordially invite you to a panel discussion on how Ukraine’s history has shaped its place in Europe with historian Paul Robert Magocsi.
Russia’s 2022 unlawful invasion of Ukraine changed global geopolitics. For the first time in the 21st century, a so-called great power has launched a full-scale war on its smaller neighbour, thus upending the post-Cold War order on both sides of the Atlantic. In a broad discussion, Prof. Paul Robert Magocsi will explore what the war has exposed about Ukraine’s place in Europe, how it has shaped relations between Ukraine’s many ethnic and linguistic groups, what blind spots in Europe’s commemorative culture became apparent through the war, and what the future may hold for Ukraine.
Paul Robert Magocsi is Professor of history and political science at the University of Toronto, where (since 1980) he also holds the professorial Chair of Ukrainian Studies. He is a Board Member of the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter, a Canadian charitable nonprofit organization.
Moderator: Prof. Stefan Troebst, former Director of Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe.
Introductory remarks: Dr. Kateryna Rietz-Rakul, Ukrainian Institute in Germany, and Marieluise Beck, Center for Liberal Modernity.
Discussion language: English.
The event will be followed by a small reception.
